Pilates is a full body system of movement developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates of Germany. The method called "Controlology" was a combination of eastern (yoga and martial arts) and western strength moves designed for whole body strength and flexibility. The movement combines the breath with emphasis on unifom development of the body through core strength, flexibility and awareness of spinal alignment.
Joseph Pilates wrote the book "Return to Life" which details the importance of diaphramatic breathing for circulation and detoxing of the body. The breath in concert with the exercise can act as a meditation in movement.
The Pilates exercises do not include a lot of repetitions for each move. Pilates was more interested in quality rather than quantity of movement.
